Pacific Section Scholarship
The Pacific Section Scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student registered in an undergraduate geoscience program at the University of Victoria. The $500 award was established in 1985 with proceeds from the annual Geological Association of Canada – Mineralogical Association of Canada conference (GAC-MAC) hosted in Victoria in 1983.
The Awards Committee of the School of Earth and Ocean Science selects the recipient from full-time students who are entering third or fourth year and are pursuing careers in the solid Earth sciences.
The recipient also receives a one-year membership to the Pacific Section.
University of Victoria (UVIC) – Geological Association of Canada – Pacific Section (GAC-PAC) – Scholarship
Since 1995 the University of Victoria (UVIC) award a $500 scholarship to a School of Earth and Ocean Sciences (SEOS) undergraduate student who is nominated by a SEOS Faculty Committee. The scholarship is funded from a $5000 donation to UVIC by the Geological Association of Canada (GAC) following the GAC 1995 Annual Meeting in Victoria.
At their 2016 annual general meeting the GAC-Pacific Section approved contributing an additional $500 towards the UVIC scholarship. The GAC-PAC is pleased to announce that in 2017 the UVIC scholarship for $1000 is awarded to Saskia Kowallik, an undergraduate at the University of Victoria. Saskia is in her third year of studies, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Earth Science with a minor in Ocean Sciences, which lends itself well to her love for the outdoors. An ability to be involved in hands-on field work throughout her program is something she is very passionate about. In the summer of 2016, Saskia had the opportunity to spend three weeks on board an icebreaker as part of a NSERC Student Research award project. Outside of school, she can usually be found biking, hiking or general adventuring.
